Silk Landscapes Set
Fashion Designers Inspiration From The Southern Hemisphere
In the middle of an autumn afternoon the ocean beneath your feet washes away the sand. The warm sun beats on the back of your neck; Sunset over the ocean, sunset overland. The rocks turn purple and sky pink to the horizon.
On the same day, along way from shore;
In the outback where the gun barrel highway begins, the desert freezes and they grow oranges and grapefruit, but there are too many fruits to eat so they fall and rot into the ground. Peanut farmers tried their luck, gold diggers, some lucked in some lucked out, but none alive to tell the tale. Is this where Lasseters reef lies, to the north east of Kalgoorlie, was the man really crazy, or, as geologists truly believe, there exists in this region the richest gold reef ever, just waiting for discovering. Lasseters reef.
This is the land of aqua oceans, red earth, Blue Mountains and pink sun sets.
What land? Aboriginal land. The biggest wool producing nation in the world and the finest goes into Hugo Boss, Armani and Zegna.
The Big Fella Lizard
The bungarra, big fella lizard, run like race horse.
Big River
Not known for multiple waterways, but the Murray Darling river system is amongst the top ten longest in the world and drains the largest area of land than any other
An Untold Story
How can you tell a story that is one hundred thousand years old, but not written, only painted by hands and passed on by “In The Dream Time” the origination of story telling. If you think the Irish, or Welsh have mastered story telling, then think Aboriginal.
A State Of Inspiration
We’re talking about a land down under, sun burnt country. Full of missed opportunities and forgotten inspiration. WA is Australia’s largest state, four thousand five hundred miles of coats line, home to one point six million human inhabitants, four times larger than Texas. And home to one thousand five hundred species of native wild flower species, including spider Orchids and Donkey Orchids.
Beyond The Great Divide
NSW, in the searing heat Eucalyptus oil evaporates from millions of trees and creates a blue haze, which against the mountains East of Sydney appears blue, hence, the Famous Blue Mountains. The Blue mountains are part of the Great Dividing Ranges, the longest range of mountains in the world.
Aqua Oceans
So we discover aqua oceans, red earth, Blue Mountains and pink sunsets. Far from our European ancestors home land.
Designer Identity
Native designers still draw inspiration from English and European origins, which kind of reveal a little insecurity in their own environment, Australians are still struggling to establish identity. They try to mimic other cultures, rather than draw from their own conclusions.
Opportunity
We can take the best of both worlds: Australia’s geographic location makes it unique, inspiration abounds with in its shores, displaying flora and landscapes like no other. Any of which can be transformed into fabric, oil on canvas, jewellery.
Take The Plunge
Our landscape inspired silk ties are maximising opportunities, and, there no signs of whimsical devotion to Kangaroos and Koala Bears. These are the Great Southern Land’s contribution to the designer tie tradition, which began in 1920 during an emergent Art Deco movement. And to further implant the concept through metal cufflinks.
It took twenty years for Art Deco to wash onto our shores, but for certain will not take as long for the tide to turn on ideas. Modern communications systems have flattened the world putting it at your fingertips.

Sarah’s Silks Single Turquoise Play Silk Playsilks are a basic ingredient for children’s imaginative play. Silks can be used to create elaborate costumes, build forts, create landscapes and water for boats and animals, and much more. Our silks are hand-hemmed in a small village near Shanghai which we have visited. The seamstresses are in their homes, often sitting in doorways, as their children play nearby. In addition, many of our prod… |
